Erika Bohn, at Notre Dame, named to 2nd Team Academic All American team. Instrumental in Notre Dame's win over UCLA in  NCAA's Division 1 Championship Game for the National Title in 2004.

Melanie Kasparek And Laura Murgo Named University College Scholars
The two sophomores were among the top-ten in the entire University's freshman class.

KINGSTON, R.I. - University of Rhode Island student-athletes Melanie Kasparek of the women's soccer team and volleyball's Laura Murgo were recently named University College Scholars. The University College Scholar award recognizes and rewards the ten top-achieving students in last year's freshman class - those who have accomplished their highest academic goals and have made contributions to the university outside of the classroom as well.

Kasparek, a native of Trumbull, Conn., is a psychology major. Kasparek had an outstanding rookie season at Rhode Island, earning second-team All-American honors after earning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year honors. She helped lead URI to their first-ever NCAA appearance in 2002. In 2002, Kasparek leads the team in scoring with eight goals and four assists for 20 points and has the team on the verge of another post-season bid.

Coaches:

Rudy Meredith - Yale (Yale women's soccer)Completed the 2003 season 9-7-1 with a 1-0 loss to Brown University. Yankee coaching director Rudy Meredith guided the Bulldogs to their first ever NCAA appearance in 2002 finishing with an 11-4-2 regular season and 12-5-2 overall recrod. Yale defeated Villanova in the first round of the NCAA tournament before losing to Nebraska 1-0. Rudy recently completed his 8th year as the head coach at Yale and is the winningest coach in school history.  


Wayne Mones - Western Ct. State University (Western Ct Men's Soccer)
Congratulation to Wayne and his Western Ct. Men's Team as they upset two teams to win the Little East Conference championship and advance to the NCAA tournament.  Western advanced to the 2nd round of the NCAA's and dropped a tough NCAA game to Williams in PK's to finish the season at 14-5-5 including Wayne's 200th career win at Western

Wayne recently completed his 16th year as the Men's head coach at Western with an 14-5-5 record.   Under his leadership, the Colonials have qualified for NCAA and ECAC tournament berths ten of the last 15 years while garnering three Little East Conference Championships in 1994, 1995, and 2003 and three Independent Athletic Conference titles. He is the all-time winning soccer coach at Western with over 200 victories.  

Players:


Amber Albrecht - Hofstra (Barlow, Yankee Rage) -  Amber had the goal in 1-1 tie vs. George Mason that clinched regular season title and #1 tournament seed for Hofstra during the week as Hofstra finish's the  regular season at 13-2-3.   Hofstra were upset by William & Mary 1-0 in the conference tournament to finish their season at 13-3-3.

Second season on the Hofstra roster…2002: Played in all 20 games…Recorded two goals and one assist for five points on theseason…Scored goals against Eastern Michigan and Quinnipiac…

Brianne Baker - Yale (Canterbury, Yankee Magic) -   Sophomore reserve appeared in several games for 9-7-1 Yale. An ankle injury limited Baker to one game as a rookie. She has the potential to play a grater role on the defense this fall. At the Canterbury School, Baker earned all-state honors in her junior and senior seasons. She also was a four-time all league selection and was named Canterbury’s Best Female Athlete as a senior. In addition, Baker was the captain of the Yankee United Magic Premier Team.

Erika Bohn - Notre Dame (Brookfield, Yankee Rage)Erika named to 2nd team Academic All American Team.  Erika was starting goalie for #4 ranked Notre Dame who were upset in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament 1-0 by Michigan.  During the year Sophomore Erika Bohn completed a personal 11-game shutout streak spanning 989 minutes, longest by a Division I women's goalkeeper since 1999 and fifth overall on that NCAA list (just 15 minutes behind the 1999 shutout streak posted by Tiffany DeCoff of Holy Cross). Erika finished the season with a .46 goals against average which was in the NCAA top ten.   Erika was named to the Notre Dame classic All Tournament team. 

Sherry Black - Iona College (Fairfield, Yankee Magic).  Freshman for Iona (3-13-2) scored her first college goal in loss to Northeastern.  Played in 14 games for the year, starting 6, and ended the year with 1 goal, 1 assist.

Dierdra Colavolpe --- SCSU (Hamden, Yankee Heat)   The sophomore from Hamden ended the year with 3 assists for the year as Southern finished 12-7.

Kendall Cox --- Bowdoin College (Choate, Yankee)   The junior from Guilford was recently named 3rd team all All America and 1st team All NESCAC for the 2003 season after leading Bowdoin to a 12-3 record for the season.  Off the field Kendall earned 1st team All Academic honors in the NESCAC conference.   Cox earned her second-straight All-New England honor and was also named First-Team All-NESCAC for the second time after another stellar campaign 'quarterbacking' the Bowdoin backfield. Although she only collected one assist, her true value to the team was in her defensive play, as the Polar Bears allowed only 10 goals in 16 games this season. Kendall was a First-Team All-New England selection last year.  Bowdoin advanced to the semi finals in the conference tournament where they lost to Bates 1-0.

 

Libba Cox --- Colby College (Choate, Yankee Rage)   The freshman from Guilford was recently named 2nd team All NESCAC for her play in helping lead Colby to an 8-5-1 record for the year.  Cox, a midfielder, was second on the Mules in scoring with seven goals and one assist for 15 points. She was ninth in the NESCAC in both points per game (1.15) and goals a game (0.54). Libba helped Colby go from a 5-9 record in 2002 to an 8-5-1 record this past season. The Mules were outscored 38-30 last year, but had a 41-18 scoring advantage in 2003.

Elise Dardani --- Fairfield (New Canaan, Yankee Magic/Rage).Freshman is reserve goaltender for Fairfield and appeared in 1st game of year against Wagner recording 1 save.

Led New Canaan high school to back-to-back State Championships in 2001 and 2002 Holds the Connecticut record for the most career shutouts … four-year selection to All-FCIC … Named All-New England as a senior … Team Captain … recipient of New Canaan’s Principal’s Leadership Award … Also named high school’s Most Outstanding Female Student-Athlete.

Laura Delbiondo --- Hofstra (Farmington, Yankee Rage) Laura started 5 games for 13-3-3 Hofstra on defense --- recorded 1 assist to date in 2003. 

Third season on the Hofstra Soccer roster. 2002; played in just two games due to injury. 2001; played in all 19 games, starting in 14. Had one goal for two points on the season. Tallied game-winner at Towson, took four shots. Member of the America East Academic Honor Roll.

Christina DelBuono --- SCSU (Holy Cross, Yankee Magic) Starting forward for SCSU has 3 goals, 2 assists for the year and is third leading scorer for the Owls who ended the year at 12-7.

Lauren Erwin --- Boston University (Amity, Yankee Magic & Rage)Lauren recently named to the All Conference Rookie team for the America East Conference as she started at midfield for Boston University (11-5-4) and had first collegiate goal in 5-0 win over Massachusetts.   Lauren scored in the 4-1 win over Stony Brook when she jumped on a misplayed ball in the penalty area and fired a low line drive shot past Stony Brook keeper Cindy Bennett.  BU won the conference tournament but dropped a 1-0 decision to UConn in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

Jessica Gomes --- Western Ct. State University (Lyman Hall, Yankee Magic).  Jessica was recently named to the 2nd team All Conference, Little East Conference for the 2003 season.  Jessica had a goal and assist in Western's last regular season game, a 12-0 win over UMASS - Boston.   She finished the season with 6 goals, 4 assists as Western advanced to the ECAC tournament finishing the season 13-6-4. 

Kaitlin Herlihy --- Colby College (Simsbury, Yankee Rage). The sophomore midfielder from Simsbury was a key player in Colby's big improvement in 2003.

Megan Kasparek - Rhode Island (Trumbull, Yankee Heat).  Megan recently named to the conference All Academic team as she sports a 3.95 GPA in Communication Disorders.  Megan named 2nd team All Conference in the Atlantic 10 conference for her stellar performance in 2003.  A starting midfielder for the Rams, Megan scored the two goals and assisted on another in Rhode Island's 4-0 win over Duquesne.  She now has 3 goals and 4 assists in 19 games for URI as they finished their season with a 2-1 overtime loss to Richmond in the conference tournament.  

2002: Started all 23 games, one of only six players to do so … played nearly every minute of every game … tallied her first collegiate point with an assist in the Rams 4-1 win at Xavier …Graduated from Trumbull High in 2002 … named All-FCIAC from1999-01 … earned an all-state title in 2000 ... was honored as all-region scholar athlete in 2001 … was named All-New England in 2001 … has a career high of 45 goals and 40 assists … helped team win three state championships in 1998, 1999 and 2001 as well as four straight FCIAC championships from 1998-01 … also a member of the Yankee United Heat 1998 Regional Championship club team and the Yankee United Rage team that captured the 1999, 2000 and 2001 state championships

Melanie Kasparek - Rhode Island (Trumbull, Yankee Heat).   Melanie Kasparek named Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Student Athlete of the Year.   Melanie was named 1st team Atlantic 10 and Offensive Player of the Year after leading Rhode Island and the Atlantic 10 conference in scoring. Kasparek won her league-leading third Atlantic 10 Player of the Week award of the season after tallying 10 points in a pair of Conference victories for Rhode Island as well as Soccer America team of the week.   She finished the year with 14 goals and 6 assists for 2003 season.  Melanie was also honored recently with a University College Scholar award (see above) for her academic work in 2002.


2002: A second-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American, one of only two freshmen to earn that honor … earned All-Northeast region honors from Soccer Buzz and the NSCAA … named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year … was the conference’s rookie of the week on four occasions … a first-team All-Atlantic 10 performer … set URI’s fresman scoring record with 14 goals and 10 assists for 38 points High School: Graduated from Trumbull High in 2002 …named All-FCIAC from1999 through 2001 … earned all-state titles in 1999 through 2001 … was honored as an all-New England in 2000 and 2001 … had a career total of 72 goals and 52 assists … selected as a Connecticut Post All-Star as well as a New Haven Register All-Star in 1999, 2000 and 2001 … helped Trumbull High win three state championships in 1998, 1999 and 2001 as well as four straight FCIAC championships from 1998-01 … honored as the Most Valuable Player of the 2001 FCIAC Championship game and Most Valuable Player of the class LL state championships in 1999 and 2001 … also played for Yankee United Heat on the 1998 Regional Championship team … helped lead the Yankee United Rage club team to the 1999, 2000 and 2001 state championship

Crystal Lindsay - University of New Haven (North Haven, Yankee Heat) - Crystal Lindsay was a near unanimous selection as Rookie of the Year, while also landing an All-Conference First Team slot at the forward position in the NYCAC conference. .Crystal recorded two goals in 3-0 win over St. Thomas Aquinas as New Haven finished the season 7-8-3 and 6-2-3 in the conference.   Sophomore set school record earlier this year with goals in five straight games and let New Haven for the season with16 goals, 4 assists.  Was named the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) Rookie of the Week for two weeks.  Lindsay scored all three UNH goals in the Chargers’ recent 3-1 upset win at New York Institute of Technology, snapping NYIT’s seven game win streak. The game marked the second time this season Lindsay has scored three goals in a game as she netted three in a win over Teikyo Post earlier this season.

Mimi Macauley - Yale (Wilton, Yankee Magic & Rage).   Freshman Mimi Macauley recorded two assists in 3-0 win over Fairfield during the week.  Scored a goal midway through the first half to lift the Bulldogs over the University of Pennsylvania Quakers, 1-0 in Philadelphia earlier in the year. Freshman is starter at forward for 9-7-1 Yale and had her first career goal in win over Georgetown in Cape Cod Classic earning player of the game honors.


Mimi lettered in soccer for four years at Wilton High School and captained the team for two seasons. She helped lead the squad to two state championships, and Wilton was at one point ranked fifth nationally. Her club teams won two state championships, and were state runners-up on three occasions. Macauley earned All-American, All-New England, all-state and All-FCIAC honors, and was twice named MVP.


Manya Makoski - Arizona State (Trumbull, Yankee Heat & Rage).  Manya was honorable mention PAC-10 All Academic team for her work off the field.  Manya was named 2nd team All Pac-10 for the second consecutive year. Makoski, a sophomore midfielder, claims her second straight second team award. She finished the season fourth on the team with four goals, four assists and 12 points, and eighth all-time in all three categories.  Arizona completing their season with a 1-0 loss to #3 ranked Santa Clara after defeating #10 ranked Cal Poly in the opening round with Manya contributing an assist on the 1st goal of the game in the first 18 seconds.   Manya named to the National Women's U-21 team earlier this year is again starting at midfield for Arizona State. 

Member of the 2003 U-21 National team … scored the game-winning goal against the WUSA’s San Diego Spirit … member of the 2001-02 U-19 National team … member of the 2002 U-19 World Cup team that won the FIFA World Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Erin Margentino - New Hampshire (Farmington, Yankee Rage) - Erin appeared in 18 games for New Hampshire starting 13 for 8-9-4 New Hampshire, 5-2-2 in conference games. With UNH pressuring inside the penalty area against Stony Brook, Debbie Newman (Ashford, Conn.) touched the ball back to Erin Margentino (Farmington, Conn.). On her first shot of the season, Margentino right-footed the ball from 27 yards into the upper-right corner of the net.  New Hampshire finished their season with a 2-1 setback to top ranked Boston University in the conference tournament semis.
 
America East Academic Honor Roll, 2001-02.  2002 - Immediately stepped into a starting role in the backfield and started all 18 matches; recorded one point with an assist vs. Holy Cross; set up the late game-tying goal in that match, which UNH went on to win in overtime.  Erin is a '02 graduate of Farmington High School, where she lettered in soccer; competed on the CT State ODP Team and the Regional Team from 1997-2001; named to the All-State Team in 2001; an all-conference selection from 1998-2000; a six-year member of the Yankee United Rage club team; that team won the state cup title from 1997-2001; undecided in her academic pursuit.

Kirsten Marra - Rhode Island (Lyman Hall, Yankee Magic & Rage)  Kirsten finished the season starting in goal for URI and completed the season with .76 goals against average appearing in 7 games for URI.  Sophomore started both games this week for Rhode Island as Rams split two games while advancing to Atlantic 10 tournament this week in Richmond.  Kirsten gave up her first goal of the year in a 2-1 loss to St. Josephs recording 4 saves and also was in goal in 3-1 win against Temple.   

Katie McGregor - Boston College (Simsbury, Yankee Rage).  Katie was named to the 2nd team All Big East Conference team for her contributions in 2003.  Katie had 1st goal in 2-1 quarterfinal Big East tournament win over Rutgers after which BC upset Notre Dame to reach the conference tournament finals.  They fell to Villanova in the final game in PK's.   BC season ended with a tough 1-0 loss to Central Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA tournament to finish the season at 15-3-3.

Katie was named to the Soccerbuzz Team of the week for her efforts the week of 10/21 as she scored in all three BC victories with goal against Hartford (2-1), two goals and assist versus Miami FL (3-0) and game-winning assist to top Virginia Tech (1-0).  Named Big East Offensive player of week for of Sept 15. Starting forward for # 20 ranked Boston College Eagles who finished the season with 14 goals, 5 assists for the year including hat tricks against Wagner and Fairfield.

In 2002 -- stepped right into action her freshman season, playing in all 20 games - 14 of which she started … was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie team … SoccerBuzz Northeast Region All-Freshman team selection … earned a spot on the New England Women’s Soccer Association (NEWISA) All-New England First-Team … registered 10 points on three goals and four assists … finished the season second on the team in assists … registered three points - one goal and one assist - in a 2-2 tie with No. 6 Penn State (9/13).  Before BC -- Member of the under-19 United States National pool … National Soccer Collegiate Coaches of America/adidas All-American in 2000 and 2001 … named to the Parade Magazine All-American team as a junior and senior … earned Connecticut all-state honors all four years … four-time all-New England selection … named to the Region I team from 1998-2001 … Connecticut Player of the Year in 1999 and 2000 … won Connecticut High School state championship in 2000 while at Simsbury … played for Yankee Rage United club team, which she won Connecticut club team state championship in 1998 and 2000 and won the club team national championship in 1999.  

Shara McNeill - Georgetown (Avon, Yankee Rage)Shara was named to the 2nd Team All Big Conference after leading Georgetown in scoring this year with 7 goals, 4 assists in 19 games as Georgetown finished 7-11-1 for the year.  Scored game winner in 1-0 OT win over Providence in Big East League action and had hat trick against Howard in games earlier this year.

2002 • FRESHMAN BIG EAST All-Rookie Team selection...competed in every game for the Hoyas in 2002...leading freshman scorer with nine points...first start against William and Mary in season opener...first career point on an assist against Ohio State (9/8)...first career goal a game-winner in a 3-0 win over James Madison (9/11).  HIGH SCHOOL/ CLUB SOCCER  Three-year member of the US Region One Olympic Development Team…plays for four-time Connecticut state champion Yankee United Rage…All-State and All-New England selection…Senior Bowl MVP…2001 M Class High School State Champion Avon High School’s all-time top scorer…Student Government…Diversity Club.

Kelly McTurk - Rhode Island (East Lyme, Yankee Heat)The junior anchored the defense for URI while also contributing 1 goal, 1 assist for the year. 

For 2002 appeared in 23 games, making 22 starts in the season … a key member of a defensive unit that allowed just 25 goals in 23 games for the season … scored two points on two assists.

 

Maureen Metzger - Yale (Trumbull, Yankee Heat) - Maureen was honorable mention All Ivy League.   Metzger, who started all 17 games this season, helped anchor a Yale defense that allowed only 18 goals this fall.  Metzger has been a steady contributor since she arrived at Yale helping to direct the Yale offense from her midfield position.   

In 2001 she was awarded the Captain’s Cup as Yale’s most outstanding freshman despite missing the last six games with an injury. Her two points were assists against Sacred Heart and Central Connecticut. At Trumbull High School, Metzger was a member of three state championship teams and earned all-state, All-New England and All-American recognition as a senior.


Karlyn Miselis - UConn (Glastonbury,Yankee Rage/Heat)
- Karlyn started for UConn in the NCAA Title game on defense and played a significant role in the tournament to reach the finals before they lost to North Carolina 6-0.  Highlights in the tournament included a 
5-0 blanking of Michigan, a 3-1 victory over BYU, and a 2-0 victory in he semifinals over Florida State. In the semifinal game Florida State looked destined to take a 1-0 lead but  UConn back-liner Miselis (Glastonbury, CT) was standing on the goal line, and cleared the ball out of danger’s way allowing for the counter attack that UConn capitalized on for the game-winner. 

High school soccer team was state finalists in 2000 and 01 ... also played soccer with Yankee United Rage from 1995-2000 and Yankee United Heat in 2001, the teams went to regional competition all years ... a member of the ODP state team from 1996-2001, won the regionall championship in 01 and went to the national competition

Megan Mones - Fairfield (St. Joseph's, Yankee Heat).  Megan transferred to Fairfield this year and helped contribute to a 9-9-1 record from her midfield position.  Megan finished with 1 assist for the year. 

AT SIENA: Played in 18 games for the Saints, starting 16… Missed the entire 2001 season recovering from ACL surgery.  Management major … Four-year varsity letterwinner at St. Joseph …Named All-State in Connecticut as well as All-New England…Played with Yankee United Heat premier team …Three-year starter in the Olympic Development Program.

Kim Noivadhana - UConn (Wilton, Yankee Heat)Sophomore appeared in 11 games in 2003 for 13-5-3 Huskies starting several during the middle of the year.

2002 (redshirt freshman at UConn) saw time in five games on defense … had one assist on the season, in UConn’s 3-0 win over Syracuse. A four-year letterwinner in women’s soccer at Wilton HS was part of the 1999 & 2000 state championship team in soccer ... also crowned 1998 regional champions with Yankee United Club Team ... donned with All-State, All-New England and All-FCIAC Team honors

Ashley Prescott - Western CT (Norwalk, Yankee Magic).  Sophomore started on defense for Western who finished the season at 13-6-4.

Meighann Recile - Boston College (Hamden Hall, Yankee Rage).  Appeared in 2 games for 15-3-2 Eagles during the 2003 season.

Erika Sharpe - Williams College (New Canaan, Yankee Magic/Rage).

Marie Strelka - Cincinnati (Trumbull, Yankee Heat)  2002: Fifth on team with three goals despite missing a month due to injury ... scored game-winner in season-opening win at Xavier ... earned third start in NCAA second round, scoring UC’s lone goal in loss to Tennessee ... Topcat Scholar.

Jenny Sullivan - UCONN (Stonington, Yankee Heat).  Key contributor to UConn from midfield position as UConn advanced to NCAA Finals before losing to North Carolina 6-0.  Jenny scored the 3rd goal in the game against Michigan to put it out of reach of Michigan.

In 2002 Jenny was a redshirt freshman at UConn. She started in all 25 games for the Huskies … netted four goals, including the game-winners in the Wisconsin tournament against the Badgers and St. Louis to earn herself a spot on the Rocky Rococo Soccer Invitational All-Tournament team … assisted on six more goals during the season while playing as an outside defender and midfielder.

April Suida - Yale (Alpharetta, GA, Yankee Rage)April scored goal late in game vs. Columbia on long 30 yard shot before Columbia pulled out a 2-1 win over Yale over the weekend for for 9-7-1 Yale Bulldogs. 

April enjoyed an outstanding rookie season for the Bulldogs. She started all 19 games and often marked an opponent’s top scorer. As a senior at Milton High School, Suida was named team MVP and earned all-county honors. Prior to that she played for three years at Glastonbury High School in Connecticut and was a two-time all-conference selection/ She also ran track at Glastonbury and set the school record in the 200 and 200-meter dashes.

Stacey Zelek - University of South Carolina (Lauralton Hall, Yankee Heat).  Stacey playing defense for 10-8-3 Gamecocks as they finished the season with a 1-0 loss to top ranked Tennessee in the SEC tournament   Scored first career goal in 4-1 win over Davidson earlier this year.

Brave defender, who will return healthy in 2003 after a long recovery from knee surgery ... Showed well in the spring, is competing for a position in the back four.   2002 - Saw playing time in two matches ... Was slowed from a knee injury suffered during her freshman year.
